The FFA Orlando teams up each year with the AIA Florida Chapter to hold a design competition. The competition focus is on designing a Health Care Clinic for the homeless in the Paramore district located in the downtown Orlando, FL. We decided to feature a project from the competition we found fit Co-tain’s focus on pushing the ideas of affordable prototypes. The project submitted by Gretel Castillo and Lance Moore, recent graduates, chose to incorporate the use of shipping containers. Their approach was to develop what they hoped to become not only a design possibility for the competition but a template for a national design approach to health care centers for homeless. The two where able to pre-configure containers to fit the program needs so that mobility became a possible. The outcome looks to be promising and even though the design caught heavy criticism along the way, the up and coming designers received third-place for the design at the 2010 AIA convention in Jacksonville.
